COVID-19 MBS - bulk billing requirements removed for consultant physicians and paediatricians

Following AACP's meetings with the Health Minister's MBS Adviser, and discussions with the Department of Health, the Minister for Health has confirmed today, 20 April 2020, the removal of the bulk billing requirement relating to patients under 16 years and for patients at risk of COVID-19 - these changes are effective today. Normal billing practices will now apply.

The AACP had expressed concerns about the impact on consultant physicians and paediatricians of the continuing requirement for all patients aged under 16 years to be bulk billed and the impact of requiring bulk billing of "patients at risk of COVID-19".

There are a number of other changes also being implemented from today. This includes COVID-19 telehealth and telephone items for public health physicians. These items can be found here. The Minister's media release announcing these changes can be seen here.

The AACP is pleased to have been able to work with the Government to achieve these changes and I hope these further changes will relieve some of the difficulties that members have been experiencing and the AACP will keep you advised of further changes as they occur. We will also provide links to the relevant Department of Health Fact Sheets and legislation when they are available; these are expected to be available online later today.
